I liked Joost and was a  beta tester from the beginning. I got some great news today in my mailbox that Joost is going fully online. I am glad they changed paths from being a downloadable software to a online website showing videos of mainstream TV programs. They are considered a competitor of Hulu. I also like the fact that you can login and merge your existing Joost account to your Facebook account. Even though they started online video content in October they now are finally shutting down the software option to view videos this Friday Dec 19th.

Here is the email that I received from Joost.

In October, we introduced our new website – Joost.com. With our new website, you’re able to watch all of our videos – TV shows, music videos, and films – right in your web browser.
At this point, we have decided to discontinue our original Joost software application. As of Friday, Dec. 19th, you will no longer be able to watch videos in the Joost software application – but you will be able to find all of our videos, and more, on.
Log on to Joost.com today for a complete online video experience!

Read Caroline McCarthy’s article Joost: The Sequel an extract is below;

Built by Skype and Kazaa founders Janus Friis and Niklas Zennstrom and originally known under the shady codename “The Venice Project,” Joost was buzzed about long before its launch as a potential “YouTube killer.” It was pumped full of venture capital from both Silicon Valley firms and entertainment-industry stalwarts (including CBS, which now publishes CNET News) excited about the possibility for an online video hub free of the piracy issues that continue to plague YouTube. At its initial launch, Joost invite codes were traded around the blogosphere like currency.
