Malcolm Galdwell Speaks about Human Capitalization at Pop!Tech

November 20, 2008 :: Shashi Bellamkonda

I was thrilled to meet Malcolm Gladwell at Pop!tech in October. Malcolm Gladwell’s book ‘Tipping Point” is one of the few non-fiction books my teen age daughter read and discussed with me. I am have a lot of respect for Malcolm Galdwell and I was thrilled to meet him at Pop!Tech and get his book autographed.Poptech @008 - Camden MainePop!tech released the video of his Talk on Human Capitalization which was a preview for his forthcoming book Outliers: The Story of Success that is being released on Nov 18th

Even though its been a few weeks since his talk , here are my thoughts from his talk.
- We are wasting some effective Human Capital by actions like choosing the big kids in each class for sports when they are 8 or 9.
This is a study by Barnsley RH, Thompson AH, Barnsley PE (1985). Hockey success and birth-date: The relative age effect. Journal of the Canadian Association for Health, Physical Education, and Recreation, Nov.-Dec., 23-28
- There is a story on why some people believe Chinese Americans excel not because of IQ but because culturally they work hard and do not give up. ( See http://www.theamericanscholar.org/au07/flynn-restak.html and and http://www.indiana.edu/~intell/flynneffect.shtml ).
I am eagerly waiting to read Malcolm Gladwell’s new book Outliers.

  • Hey @Sashib,
    Was recently reading someone else's post on the new Gladstone book. Inspired a post from me too! I think the not giving up is crucial, as well as something I've been hearing referred to as brilliancy, tapping into a big pool of creativity. Cheers.
  • I think that's book is very good .... is there any of this book that can downloaded online...??? :-)
