nsBizTip #2

On the Second Day of Business Tips Network Solutions said to me
Regularly back up your data.

Many small businesses don’t back up their data, and as a result, their computers are time bombs waiting to go off. Files become corrupt, hard drives fail, motherboards malfunction, and mistakes erase data.

Imagine what would happen to your business if you woke up to discover that your computer with all your financial data and customer information had died? A full data recovery could cost you several days of productivity. How much is your time worth to you?

The best defense is data backup. Regular data backup doesn’t have to be painful or expensive. Ideally, you should look for new technology that allows for automatic, off-site backups that protect you even further by storing your critical data at another location.

Backing up data is vital for business. Commit to make better use of technology and backup software that helps keep your business protected from possible failure. Most of these packages are affordable and are worth their weight in gold when disaster strikes.

The great technical and customer service teams at Network Solutions have kept me a satisfied client over 10 years. As my business has grown, NWS is there with the products I need to keep my web presence secure and professional.

What better holiday treat for my business than great service with a smile!

  • Free way to back up your documents is use Dropbox. Download the application to your computer. Save files in to the Dropbox folder in your documents folder. The Dropbox folder is stored in the cloud. The other benefit is if your computer gets lost or stolen, you can log in to Dropbox from the web and access the files in the Dropbox folder. They have a small fee if you are storing a large volume of files. Super simple and easy and allows you to safely share documents across computers at your office or in your home.

I made a playlist featuring three of my favorite songs to play at the end of each business day! Each evening, I start the playlist when I'm ready to wrap up for the day. During the first song, I save and close all of my programs and documents. During the second song, I backup to my external HD and my web server. During the third song I run a defrag on my computer, empty my trash, and/or complete any other other maintenance issues.

I look forward to hearing the playlist all day so I am not at all tempted to ignore the mundane end-of-day tasks I've associated with them. Backing up is so easy to put off that I've found I simply must associate something fun with the job if I am going to get it done. I end the day feeling great AND having completed the tasks necessary for keeping my files safe and up to date.
