Joe Pulizzi – Everyone is a Publisher today

May 26, 2009 :: Shashi Bellamkonda

I was glad that  Elizabeth Shea of SpeakerBox invited me to their event on May 13th featuring Joe Pulizzi of  Junta 42 (@juntajoe ) co-author of “Get Content. Get Customers.” Joe spoke about the new trends in marketing where content plays a very important role. He spoke about the customer behavior  change from getting product information from company representatives, print ads, brochures etc to searching for product information, reviews and “word of mouse” online. I think several of the audience agreed that Amazon.com was one of the first places where they look at reviews.

Speakerbox had gathered a very enthusiastic audience and there was no shortage of questions for the speaker.

I liked the statement that Joe made “Content Marketing is the art of understanding exactly what your customer needs to know and delivering it to them in a relevant and compelling way.”

Other top takeaways from Joe Pulizzi’s talk were:

  • It is about the audience , communicators must try to introduce their brand into every sentence and spoil the readers experience.
  • Take the example of HomeMadeSimple.com, looking at the sit you hardly know that this is a Proctor and Gamble web site. In fact I had to scroll all the way down to find some brand logos.
  • The new strategy for companies is to give give and give without expecting a return . I heard the term “lethal generosity”  for the first time from Joe and how Jeremiah Owyang is  a pioneer in lethal generosityShel Israel describes lethal generosity as  “the concept that the most generous members of any social media company are the most credible and influential and as such, they can devastate their competition in the marketplace.”
  • Some one within the company should own the social media activities – maybe designate someone as the Chief Conversation Officer ( I like this title and here are some more Social Media titles for you to look at)
  • Listening and finding where your customers hang out is key.
  • Give away your content freely

Take a look at the slides that Joe Pulizzi presented in this post for 15 steps to take immediately. Everyone who attended this SpeakerBox event at Viget Labs got a copy of “Get Content. Get Customers.

If you have also blogged about this event please let me know and I will update this post so attendees can see all the recaps. We learn every day and this was a extra bonus learning opportunity for me.
