Saturday was BarCampDC 3, the third iteration of the free BarCamp-style unconference in DC, where there are no spectators (only participants); attendees set the agenda; everybody contributes and has a chance to lead a session; and during sessions, attendees are encouraged to vote with their feet if they’re not getting what they want from the discussion.

Apparently, another characteristic of weekend unconferences is that I’m unable to get to them on time. I also forgot my camera (brought the accessories, though) and had a hard time finding parking, so I was a little frazzled — I missed the agenda-setting and first session, so it took me a while to get settled in.

The event was held at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library (aka the DC Public Library), spread between the basement meeting rooms and some of the upstairs lobby rooms. I don’t think I’d ever actually been inside the library before. Access to power and wifi was good (except for one room); outside of some early temperature shifts and the occasional random passerby wandering through the upstairs lobby rooms, the space was fine.

The first session I attended (second of the day) was about developing gadgets for Google Wave, though also covered the essential question, “What the heck is Google Wave and what’s it good for?” (I got my invite and have used it, but admit I still have no good answer to the question.) A lot of attention has been focused on the real-time chat aspect (where you can others’ typing as it happens), though we were encouraged to not get distracted by that and look at Wave more as interconnected, embeddable, commentable document collaboration (with gadgets), without having to worry about servers and protocols, and that it will iterate and evolve according to how users actually use it.

The lunch session I sat in on sought to form organizing committee for a TEDx event in DC; TEDx essentially licenses the TED concept, bringing thought leaders across disciplines to speak (there had been a TEDx Mid Atlantic just this month that’d I’d managed to miss completely). TEDx is the kind of prestige event that I most likely wouldn’t be able to attend unless I was helping to organize it, and there’s no shortage of star power in DC, so it’ll be interesting to see what happens.

Post-lunch was a neat session looking at free, location-based mashup technologies (that broadened to look at other mashup technologies); I’ll just throw out a bunch of links mentioned including GeoNames, MaxMind, ip2location, GeoHash, OpenCalais, ProgrammableWeb, and my favorite, StupidFilter.

The next session I split between a discussion of computer-generated audio and video (I would characterize it as trying to build Anthem, the everything-to-music converter from Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency), and a wide-ranging discussion of generalist vs. specialist (which covered everything from the elevation of manual labor, work-life balance, networking and personal growth).

The final session was a pretty useful discussion on how to be a good freelancer; there was a lot of good, though sometimes contradictory info about how to talk to your employer about side gigs, corporate structure, the role of lawyers, accounting tips, managing clients, managing projects and scope creep, and billing.

Because of scheduling, the last session was abandoned (or rather, continued at the bar) — the happy hour included BarCamp participants, as well as the woman-oriented DC She’s Geeky (scheduled at the same time as BarCamp, it may account for the particularly male-heavy attendance there).

For more information, check out posts, photos, and tweets tagged “barcampdc3″ and “barcamp.”

This day started with some intense topics – education, public health and the mainstream media. So let’s get to the recap of day 2.

Highlight #1 – Twitter and Education

On of the first panels was on education and was comprised of Aparna Vashisht (@Parentella) – Founder, Parentella, Eric Sheninger (@NMHS_Principal) – New Milford High School, NJ, Shelly S Terrell (@ShellTerrell) – Educator and Blogger, Teacher ReBoot Camp, Steven W. Anderson (@web20classroom) – Educator and Blogger, Web 2.0 Connected Classroom, Tom Whitby (@tomwhitby) – Professor of English, Secondary English. They discussed all of the ways Twitter is engaging those in the classroom.

Highlight #2 – Twitter and Public Health Messaging

Right after a discussion on education, health care professionals talked about how was comprised of Amy DeMaria (@AmyDeMaria) – Sr. Vice President of Communications, Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Beverly Robertson (@marchofdimes) – National Director, Pregnancy & Newborn Health Education Center, Colleen Patterson (@colleenpattrson) – National Aboriginal Health Organization, Marc Sirkin (@autismspeaks) – Chief Community Officer, Autism Speaks , Nedra Weinreich (@Nedra) – Founder, Weinreich Communications (moderator). They discussed non-profits and how people are using social media to find information about health issues. They discussed how Twitter has become such a rich community for people to connect and engage in raising awareness. The video of the panel is below (courtesy of Blip.TV):

Highlight #3 – Twitter and the News

Next came the panel discussion about the impact of Twitter and Real-Time web on the news cycle. It was called Making. News. Now. Participants in the panel included Alexia Tsotsis (@alexiatsotsis) – ech/Business Lifestyle Reporter, SF Weekly, Andrew Nystrom @ LAT (@latimesnystrom) – Digital Media Strategist, Los Angeles Times, Kevin Sablan (@ksablan) – Blogger, 140pix.com and AlmightyLink.com , Mark Milian (@mmilian) – LA Times Writer: Tech + Social media + Politics + Indie Rock Music, Richard Rushfield (@richardrushfield) – West Coast Editor, Gawker.

They talked about the Miracle on the Hudson, fake Twitter deaths and how mainstream news organizations have to use this tool but be very careful in who they are sourcing because rumors and bad reporting can occur. The video of the panel is below (courtesy of Blip.TV):

AND ALL THESE PRESENTATIONS WERE FROM 8-9am. Wow.

Other Presentations of Note and Some Final Thoughts

Throughout the day people talked about innovative ways they have used Twitter to engage customers, talk to fans, build brands, fight cancer and generally is creating impact to make change all over the world. You can see more videos at the 140Conf Blip.TV Channel.

As the day wrapped I was truly impressed with a conference that before I came thought might just be an echo chamber of technology people telling themselves how awesome Twitter is and how awesome they are because they use the cool tools.

I arrived on Monday in Los Angeles to attend the “Very Important Characters (VIC)” event and got to see some old friends and meet some new ones. After a great evening I got a great night’s sleep and got to the Kodak Theatre early to see everything kick off.

I have been to LA more times than I can count but I had never been to the Kodak Theatre which is where they hold the Oscars every year. What was really suprising was that it was connected to a kind of outdoor California mall but the place has so much history and our event co-host Jeffrey Hazlett along with the Kodak social media team, was a very involved participant.

Kicking Things Off

Jeff Pulver, creator and co-host of the 140Conf LA, kicked things off and had this to say in his recap of the event “Two words: Serendipity and Humanity”. I couldn’t agree more. The event started with this funny opening video from Mashcast and the opening video is below (courtesy of Blip.TV):

Jeff explained the extremely packed agenda and small presentation windows (usually 10 minutes) – 140 characters over two days just like the length of a Tweet (140 character post on Twitter) – very clever. What was great about it was that people had to get to the point and in true Oscar fashion, they played the Oscar “get off the stage your time is up music” (Ben Hur soundtrack) which a few people did on purpose just so they can say they were kicked off the stage at the Kodak.

Being in Hollywood you would expect that many of the topics and speakers would revolve around the impact of Twitter and real-time communications on the entertainment industry.

Highlight #1 – Virgin America and Twitter

First half of the morning had Porter Gale (@porterVA), VP Marketing at Virgin America. If you haven’t flown this airline, it is truly amazing – power in every seat and fleet wide wi-fi. She talked about some amazing experiences of people using Twitter to share experiences, reach out for customer service and even order a drink for someone on the same flight because they were listening on Twitter. She also made one of my favorite analogies “Flying on VA is like flying inside an iPod”. Below is the video of her talk (via Blip.TV):

Highlight #3 – Mark Horvath, Lizard Man of Hollywood Blvd

Around 4pm, Mark Horvath (@hardlynormal) gave a presentation on how the homeless are using Twitter to communicate. He was homeless on Hollywood Blvd for about 5 years in the 1990’s. I first met him at the Gnomedex conference and it was a truly amazing thing he is doing getting awareness for a topic most of us ignore everyday, homelessness. You would be blown away with the real faces of who is homeless. Twitter is a free real-time tool that they can use and he got a truly deserved standing ovation. You really need to watch this presentation. Below is the video of his talk (via Blip.TV):

Highlight #4 – Marc Salsberry: Passion + Cancer= Perfect Wingman

Many of you in the tech industry might know Marc (@wmmarc) and for those of you that don’t, he makes us in the tech industry look like rock stars and has a saying that sums it all: “A life without passion is mere existence, and merely existing isn’t living”. He is an entrepreneur but takes amazing pictures and it was a gateway to really network and meet new people. He says “before Rolling Stone, they were musicians with greasy hair that didn’t bathe, but after Rolling Stone, they were rock stars”. He wants to do the same for and show people those in the tech community for the rock stars they are.

He spoke emotionally about his brother’s recent fight and loss to cancer. It was truly inspiring and how he used Twitter to share his life and his brother’s fight. He talked about how people have been introduced to their wife or their next business partner and how his being a photographer has connected his to so many amazing people and to become the perfect wingman.

Below is the video of his talk (via Blip.TV):

Highlight #5 – Kevin Pollack

Around 5pm Kevin Pollack (@kevinpollack) was interviewed by Jeff Pulver and went right after Marc Salsberry. Kevin is a total class act and asked Marc if it was “ok to be a smart ass”. He talked about how “the meek shall inherit the earth 140 characters at a time”. “Using Twitter for Pursuing Your Passion”. He talked about his show, the Kevin Pollack Show, Below is the video of their talk (via Blip.TV):

End of Day 1 – All I can say is “WOW”

As you can see above, these talks were just a sample of the amazing talks which you can watch all on the 140Conf Blip.TV channel. Truly a stellar first day and I can’t wait until day 2.

Starting tomorrow, I will be attending the #140Conf in Los Angeles, CA at the famous Kodak Theater (this is where the Oscars are held).

According to the web site Jeff says “At the #140conf events, we look at twitter as a platform and as a language we speak. Over time it will neither be the only platform nor the only language. #140conf is not an event about microblogging or the place where people share twitter “tips and techniques” but rather where we explore the effects of the emerging real-time Internet on Business.”

He shared some thoughts on the first conference in New York city.. “The first #140conf in New York City brought together people with many diverse backgrounds but the one thing which everyone had in common was twitter.”

He goes on to say “The original scope of #140conf was to explore “the effects of twitter on: Celebrity, “The Media”, Advertising and (maybe) Politics.” Over time the scope expanded to include Sports, Music, The Arts, Sciences and more. Given the location of #140conf:LA, this event will have a special focus on the use of twitter in the Entertainment Industry.”

Now I won’t be accepting a little gold statue but I will be engaging with those who are deeply involved in leveraging Twitter and the Social Web for various things.

Coverage this Week from the Conference

This week I will be providing daily recaps of the event and gathering some video interviews for publishing when I return. All of this content will be located here on Solutions Are Power so if you are new to the blog, subscribe or keep visiting over the next week for some great coverage.

To get a feel of what you can expect at #140conf LA, please check out the recorded videos from the NYC event on the 140Conf site. The schedule for the upcoming event will be unique and fast paced. Jeff’s goal is to provide a platform for as many people as possible to share their thoughts and engage in conversation with the attending delegates. There will be individual talks set to: 10 minutes; “Featured talks” 15 and 20 minutes and the various panel discussions are set for 15 and 20 minutes.

Hear it directly from Jeff

Jeff was recently on Fox Business to talk about Twitter and the 140Conf. Here is the video:

FOX Business – Interview of Jeff Pulver on September 21, 2009:

Look for coverage to start tomorrow. See you then.

Here’s a followup to my entry about DC-area late-summer social media meetups; this week, I went to two of the events from the list.

The first was the First Official DC Google Meetup, at the swank Lima Restaurant and Lounge in DC. (So swank, in fact, that a would-be attendee posted to the Meetup event page that he was turned away at the door for wearing jeans. Lesson for us all: Know about the venue, while I am a fan of the “scruffy startup techie” look, remember that it’s always better to be over-dressed than under-.)

This meetup was billed as being open to Google employees, developers, and users (which, practically speaking, means “everybody.”), and featured a few Googlers from Mountain View. It’s apparently part of a Google goodwill tour happening across the country (and possibly the world), stopping in cities where they have a staff presence (and some where they don’t.)

Like all events of this sort, it’s a chance for employees to press the flesh, spread the word, get user feedback and do a little evangelism. As this was mostly a general audience (and not, say, an audience of developers), the presentation content was pretty basic: History of Google and Google products, some PageRank/search 101-type info, and Q&A session featuring pre-submitted Google Moderator-ed questions, as well as live questions from the audience:

And of course there was a trivia contest, where the prizes were Google Meetup T-Shirts. (Having been on both the giving and getting sides of swag distribution, I shouldn’t be amazed by the lengths people will go to get a a free, prominently branded t-shirt, yet I am.)

The next event was the next night, TechCocktail DC 6, once more at LeftBank in DC. As the name suggests, this was the sixth DC edition of this tech networking meetup started by Frank Gruber and Eric Olson, though it was the first that charged attendees. However, being well-branded and well-known to attendees, I don’t think the ten bucks dissuaded anyone, as it was about as crowded as previous editions (Me, I got comped, not because of a special “in,” but because they’d offered free admission to the first folks to retweet the event info — a bit of directed word-of-mouth.)

When it comes to TechCocktails and similar events (like the various Twin Techs), the draw for me isn’t the demos, but the people. (Partly because it can be challenging having a meaningful conversation in a bustling social environment).

Twin Tech is particularly challenging for me, because I usually know a lot of the folks there, and if I’m not careful, I’ll find myself spending most of my time talking to people I already know, instead of meeting new folks and finding out about new companies and products:

TechCocktail co-founder Frank Gruber and NetSol’s Shashi Bellamkonda.

This dynamic was in full effect on Thursday, because the AIM team was there, including many of my former cow-orkers [sic] and the revitalized AIM Running Man, so I probably did spend more than my fair share of time with them. (Though I did have an interesting talk with AIM Express lead Shawn Carnell about some not-very well promoted features, including an Adobe AIR-based multi-protocol client that provides group chat, including for SMS users — I will have to try it out.

Anyway, looking ahead, I can already see the events calendar filling up. Remember, folks — if you’re interested in the online space, meeting other thinkers and seeing what tech trends you should be aware of, see what’s going on in your neck of the woods and participate.

We’re in the dog days of summer (blog days of summer?), so things are supposed to be slow, although it just seems to mean there’s more time available for events, meetups, and other types of social media schmoozing and networking.

Here are a few things upcoming for the metro DC area, culled from DCTechEvents.com, Social Media Club DC, and other sources. While by no means comprehensive, if you know of an event, leave a comment and I’ll add it to the list.

(Oh, and I’m not saying I’m going to be at every one of these. That would be… challenging.)

August

* Wednesday, August 19 – Washington Blogger Meetup. Free; a casual, mostly social gathering of bloggers of all stripes. 7pm, Madam’s Organ (2nd floor) in the Adams Morgan neighborhood of DC.

* Thursday, August 20 – Social Matchbox DC. $15. “Speed dating for geeks” (I’m telling you, Bob, slap a trademark on that), with presentations from startups looking for talent, along with the usual networking. 6:30pm, E Street Cinema, DC

Also, that night, Refresh DC’s August Meetup. Free. This design-focused talk is entitled, “From Goya to Google: Traditional Design Principles at Work on the Web.” 7pm, AARP in DC.

* Wednesday, August 26 – DC Media Makers. Free. This edition is a mashup free-for-all, so bring your hardware and participate in your medium of choice. 6:30pm, NPR in DC.

Wednesday is also DC’s First Official Google Meetup. Free. Open to Googlers and Google users (so, basically everyone). 6pm, Lima Restaurant & Lounge, DC (right off McPherson Square Metro, great for an Orange Line suburbanite like me).

* Thursday, August 27 – TechCocktail DC 6. $10. Tech networking and demos. 6:30pm, LeftBank in Adams Morgan. (And of course, all the movers and the shakers will be at Amsterdam Falafel afterwards. Well, at least I will.)

* Saturday (yes, Saturday), August 29 – TechAdventure DC. $40. Destination socialization, featuring a bus ride out for a day of wine tasting at the Rappahannock Cellars winery. Charter bus leaves from Capitol Hill at noon. (Space is limited.)

Looking forward into September:

* Wednesday, Sept. 2 – Tap the Collective. $5. Panel discussion on collective intelligence, looking at Intellipedia and other tools. 6pm, LeftBank.

* Tuesday, Sept. 8 – Gov 2.0 Expo Showcase. $140 (early bird price to August 20). Even if you can’t finagle a way into the invite-only Gov 2.0 Summit (Sept. 9 and 10), you can still check out these Ignite-style presentations on various Government 2.0 topics, divided into 5 categories, featuring gov’t agencies (from federal to local), advocacy groups, and the private sector. 8:30am-5:30pm. Walter E. Washington Convention Center.

* Thursday, Sept. 10 – Washington DC Twestival. $20 (Proceeds benefit Miriam’s Kitchen.) The second installment of an event mobilizing Twitter-engaged communities for social good, this time benefiting local charities. 7pm, Midtown Loft, DC.

* Saturday, Sept. 12 – Sunday, Sept. 13 – CongressCamp Unconference. Free (the price of admission is participation). For Congressional staffers, advocacy groups, social technologists, and citizen advocates to talk about Government 2.0, with a particular focus on Congress. Location TBD.

Last year, Shashi and your humble correspondent attended one of the most rocking tech conferences on the continent, Gnomedex.

It is put on by, Chris Pirillo, the Original Gnome or “OG” and his Lockergnome crew in the beautiful city of Seattle. As I said in my post last year, “I have been to many conferences in the past and I have to say this is one of the best out there. Little things like working wi-fi for everyone, power in every seat to make your liveblogging acheiveable and awesome food that you would find at really expensive conferences”. This Gnomedex should be no different. In fact there will be a few surprises for us to announce as the date gets closer.

The Network gang attending Gnomedex this year has grown to include Ken Yeung, I am sorry, “The” Ken Yeung as he is known to all his fans (including me).

Like many conferences, the best conversations are usually in the hallways and this conference is one par with SXSW in that vein. Gnomedex has actually come to be known as the “affordable TED for everyone”. I really like that and suggested three years ago that Chris call the conference “GnomeTED”. Chris limits attendance to around 350-400 which makes it possible to meet almost everyone if you work hard and he really leverages web tools to connect people and employs backchannels like IRC and Twitter live to show what people are thinking as the presenter is speaking. He also does a live video feed for fans who can’t be there.

To check out who will be there in addition to Shashi and me, here is the attendee list (another great thing that most conferences don’t do) and the agenda which is going to be entertaining and educational.

Blogging from Gnomedex

We will be blogging from the conference every day (Thursday-Saturday) and capturing lots of interviews that should be rolling off the presses for publishing next week and into September. Ken will also be taking lots of awesome pictures that will be part of a Flickr feed we will have online soon.

Special Gnomedex Offer

We will be announcing a special offer for Gnomedex attendees and those watching the event online can take advantage of for a limited time. More details to come on that soon.

If you want to follow the happenings at the conference check out twitter and friendfeed which should be quite busy starting Thursday evening.

Wednesday night was the DC-area installment of the Unintentional Entrepreneur series of workshops, held by Network Solutions and Outright.com as a way to help guide entrepreneurs into building and growing their businesses.

Along with traditional entrepreneurs, in this economic climate there have been a bumper crop of unintentional entrepreneurs — people who, through circumstance, have found themselves on their own, and are using this as an opportunity to unleash their talents and create their own businesses. (I, myself, kind of fit into this category, although I don’t really think of myself as an entrepreneur — maybe it’s a mental block.)

The DC event (well, actually in Rockville, Maryland, at the Johns Hopkins University Montgomery County Campus, a site that’s hosted several social media-related events we’ve written up here) was the penultimate stop in the 5-city tour, so you can see a lot of material and coverage from the other cities at the Unintentional Entrepreneur site. Which is a good thing, because I got to the event kind of late (I blame traffic). Again, though, we can fall back on the crowdsourced note-taking via the Twitter hashtag #uedc.

I snuck into the room just as Shannon Nash was finishing up her talk on accounting, tax and legal advice for small businesses (including answering the ever-popular question, “What structure should I use: Sole proprietor, LLC, S-Corp, C-Corp, Hybrid, Partnership?”). The room was pretty full, and everyone was paying close attention:

(I took this photo, though you can see others at the Unintentional Entrepreneur Flickr set.)

Next, NetSol’s own Shashi talked about the benefits and how-to’s of establishing a presence for your business online. I have to admit I’ve heard Shashi give variations of this presentation a bunch of times, so I perhaps didn’t pay as close attention as I should have. Fortunately, the Twitter feed comes to the rescue: He covered the key points to picking a domain name for your business (keep it easy to remember and easy to spell), exhorted people to set up Facebook fan pages (if potato chips can have fan pages, you can too), and to explore other presences that could be useful (like Etsy.com for crafters and artisans.)

The last presenter was Bob London, on Marketing Your Small Business. He led off with a cloud of previously-submitted questions, and in rapid-fire fashion:

* Advocated using info from Dunn & Bradstreet to help vet potential clients.

* Said that social media was primarily a listening tool, not a revenue generator.

* Burst a few bubbles by saying that an 80:20 ratio of doing “actual work” vs. marketing and feeding the pipeline was way too high, and that the actual effort for marketing was 30-40%

* Advocated using GeniusRocket for creative

* Suggested that the pendulum may be swinging back on the effectiveness direct mail, since we get less of it now, and get more spam in e-mail.

For the rest of his presentation, he covered how for companies that aren’t Coca Cola, IBM, or GEICO (with huge marketing and advertising budgets), the best branding you can have is a solid product and customer service you can get behind. Also, instead of the elevator pitch, he advocated getting your prospective client’s “elevator rant” — their primary complaint and challenge (as they see it).

Also, he covered a few guerilla marketing techniques (like timing a newsletter to piggyback on bigger events); advocated “cloud marketing” (pushing your message out through multiple channels to create ubiquity); the value of opt-in newsletters to nurture and maintain relationships; and the best sales pitch is asking for reactions, ideas, and feedback, combined with doing your homework and getting the proper context.

In summary, the event (well, the parts I was able to catch) was well-received by an audience that ran the gamut from prospective startups to serial entrepreneurs, covering a variety of businesses. I know I’ll be delving into the hashtags and other resources to fill what I missed.

Were you at the workshop (or one of the previous ones)? Leave a comment and let us know what you thought.
